The Table Tennis Nation Man and Woman of the Year are the most important awards anyone can win in the world of ping pong. We used a combination of page views, reader comments, emails, facebook responses, tweets, and discussions at Table Tennis Nation headquarters to determine the winners. The Man and Woman of the Year are part of our Best of 2012 coverage. Keep reading to find out who the Table Tennis Nation Man of the Year is.
The 2012 Table Tennis Nation Man of the Year is Marty Reisman. Marty, who passed away in early December at the age of 82, was the most interesting man in the table tennis world year after year, but this may have never been more true than in 2012.
While Marty’s career was incredible (23 National and International championships, countless accolades), this honor is just about Marty’s year in which he appeared on the pages of TableTennisNation.com more than any other man. A year that included articles and videos in Men’s Journal and the New York Times which came out the same day, a feature in American Way, and shooting wrapped on a full length documentary about Marty. Marty even appeared on the Real Housewives of New York (maybe the only people who can thwart his ping pong skills).
Marty was the star of all the events he walked into–whether there were celebrities on hand, or it was just a night at SPiN. Even at 82, Marty was still one of the best players at any event, and we finally got to see how good and consistent Marty’s strokes were when he was recorded in super-slow motion.
Marty Reisman was not only an essential part of the table tennis community, but also Table Tennis Nation. His life made the New York Times Obituary Desk crack up and say “this is a great story.” His 2012 garnered more attention and interest than any year in American table tennis ever, and while Marty passed, he is incredibly deserving of the honor of being the 2012 Table Tennis Nation Man of the Year.
For those looking to honor Marty, we’ll be having an event at SPiN New York (48 E 23rd, between Park and Madison) on Friday January 18 starting at 8 pm. The night will include speakers, matches, and a party–a night all about Marty. We’ll have more details shortly, but please save the date and if you’d like to be involved in some way, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
